Why do lower grade bat ping better then Grade 1 bats?
« on: January 26, 2011, 19:47:52 PM »
I understand that the ping is the responsiveness of the ball rebounding off the blade. And that is partly dependent on the quality of willow. But quite often Grade 1 willow does not ping as well as other/lower grades?
So it is more dependent upon the pressing process then? And how the bat is made and how good the sweet spot is?

Complicated question. I am not really best placed to answer this, but here we go.
Grade 1s are usually grade ones on Cosmetic, rather than performance grounds. This varies company to company, therefore with GN or something, we do see lower models that go just as well...as there isn't really much difference in the willow, one just looks nicer..
Pressing is key. The pro's bats are pressed more (I think...) than ours which means that they ping better...therefore we see that their bats go like rockets...
Hope that answers your question somewhat...
Sweet spot really depends on the skill that has gone in to making the bat...

A pros bat may ping better than yours but it is likely to break quicker!

I have already put the tinniest crack in the toe.... but only surface! So it is staying the bag until 20/20 time now!

You fool! Yeah keep it in the bag. These things really do have to be used sparingly. Only using my RB in nets as I don't really have a worse bat that is knocked in...did get tim2000s off CBF's CJI today though, trade for 10 Hammer Edges, sharp work from myself haha :) definitely could be one for the 20/20s :D

I know its a little frustrating but it is only surface!
Im glad I turned CJI's spornsorship offer down... it would have been a massive mistake!

Yeah, still not great though :P
Yeah, the bat is a bargain for £20 or 10 hammer edges, but I will not for a minute say it is the best bat I have ever used etc... :| Still good for training, which was the reason I got it. The fact it goes OK is a bit of a bonus :)

Exactly. Very pleased, will weigh it now, I think it is 3lb, not the 3,2 it was made as... :)

I picked a 3lb GN up in a shop the other day, and asked the shop owner why it had such a heavy weight tag on it... it felt like a 2'10 tops!

Very good post Johan Bhai you have answered my questions very well.

I actually knew why this happens but did not know how to explain to others who believe only expensive bats and grade 1 bats perform well and lower grade are rubbish perform because they look bad. People with less knowledge judge bats performance on how good the bat looks. I know bats with good clean grains perform well but with some brands their lower graded bat outperform or perform just as good.
I've had tons of lower grade and some bats as cheap as £10(frm Pakistan) which have outperformed much more expensive bats
Last season I picked up a and Kook blade 250(£80) when I tested it with a mallet at shop it sounded as good as my much more expensive bat SG king Cobra(Grade 1 premium quality).

Interesting! Which model was it? :) I can't weigh as the scales need new batteries :'( Will do tomorrow maybe...
And Majid, you are spot on with that, all about looks with companies like GM, GN, Kook and Puma IMO, course they perform too I've heard (though have heard of some planks as Kook Kahuna 1000s)...

Many companies grade there bats on performance rather than looks.

As for your bolded statement a soft pressed usually pings more and pings instantly so pros bat must be soft pressed rather than hard pressed.

Yeah, I heard that...I wasn't sure as I said this on CBF and got corrected about it...people said bats can't be pressed softly or something...I think the best person to ask about it would be Rob Pack, as he makes so many of them for pros :D
